Waning gibbous moon at 83 percent: a bright and unfavorable context for broadband, but the target is an emission nebula processed in narrowband, which largely neutralizes that constraint. The background stays dark with no exploitable gradient, a sign the filters did their job. If you want more SNR on the weak channels, still favor moonless nights for SII, the most penalized channel and likely responsible for part of the colored mottling seen in the background.

A 0.70 degree wide field on IC 1396: this is only a portion of the nebula, framed here on the Elephant's Trunk (vdB 142) and its surroundings, and the tight framing is clearly deliberate, with the structure filling the frame and consistent margins. The monochrome camera delivers FWHM of 1.8 to 2.2 px, indicating sampling well matched to the site seeing: neither oversampled nor soft. The e_margin of 1.4 is low but that is normal behavior for a stretched narrowband integration, not a sign of underexposure.
The diagnosis in detail
The PSF inspection leaves no ambiguity: center elongation of 1.11 against a 1.02 field floor, corner/center FWHM ratio of 1.17, horizontal and vertical asymmetries of 0.011 and 0.034. All of this stays below the thresholds of a field aberration, and the 36.5 degree PA dispersion confirms there is no coherent directional elongation. In other words, no tilt, no field curvature, no tracking drift: the optics and the mount did their job.
What remains comes from processing. The sky background, particularly in the upper right quadrant and the dark areas between the pillars, shows colored mottling characteristic of poorly controlled narrowband chroma noise: bluish and greenish patches matching no real structure. That points to a background stretch applied before chroma noise reduction, or a weak channel (SII) pushed too far.
Incidentally, a few bright stars have lost their central gradient. That is cosmetic and fully recoverable with separate star processing.
Priority actions
- Reduce background chroma noise with an inverted luminance mask before any further stretching
- Increase SII channel integration to limit colored mottling at the source
- Process stars separately to preserve the color gradient of bright cores
