Near ideal conditions for this target. New moon at 1 percent means no lunar pollution is possible, and Bortle 5 is largely neutralized by working in narrowband Ha and OIII, which cuts most of the urban continuum. This is exactly the setup where a suburban sky barely penalizes you: the emission nebula comes through without gradient and the background stays clean. The real limiting factor is total integration, particularly in OIII, the weakest layer on NGC 281 and the one carrying the residual noise visible in the dark areas.

The setup matches the target perfectly. The 12.5 inch CDK paired with the Moravian C4 yields a 0.82 degree field, framing NGC 281 with comfortable margin all around: the nebula fills the frame without being cropped, exactly the right compromise. The measured FWHM of roughly 2 to 2.5 px across most of the field indicates sampling well matched to the site seeing, with no penalizing oversampling. The Paramount MX+ holds up its end: central elongation of 1.09 against a field floor of 1.06, so round stars. The Ha / OIII pair is the right call on an HII region under Bortle 5.

The diagnosis in detail

Verdict: a very high quality image whose two reservations are about post-processing, not acquisition.

Optically and mechanically, the PSF panel lets nothing slip. Elongations range from 1.06 to 1.16 across zones, with a PA dispersion of 71 degrees: angles that scattered signal round stars, not coherent elongation. The corner / center FWHM ratio is 0.875, meaning the corners are actually tighter than the center, the opposite of a field defect. The algorithm's tilt pre-verdict rests on a vertical asymmetry of 0.295, but reading the thumbnails shows the central zone falls on bright nebulosity, which artificially inflates the fitted FWHM: I therefore reject that candidate. The CDK is well collimated, the backfocus correct, the guiding healthy.

What remains comes down to the hand on the stretch. The cores of the brightest stars have gone neutral white, and the global saturation that gives this fine red / cyan contrast also amplifies background color noise, especially where OIII lacks signal. Both are fixable without touching the acquisition.

Priority actions

  1. Redo the stretch with a star mask to preserve the gradient in the brightest stellar cores
  2. Apply localized chroma noise reduction to the sky background via an inverted luminance mask
  3. Extend OIII integration, the noisiest layer, to firm up the cyan regions and the background
