Rather favorable conditions. The 10% waxing crescent is negligible, the Moon adds almost nothing to the sky background, and nothing in the image betrays a lunar gradient. Bortle 5 remains the real limiting factor for a faint galaxy like NGC 6946 in broadband IRcut: the sky background rises fast and the SNR of the spiral outskirts suffers, as confirmed by the measured background-to-blackpoint margin of 1.59. The reported 2.5 arcsec seeing is consistent with the measured FWHM and calls for no correction. For this target, favor fully moonless nights and stack more: total exposure time, not conditions, is the limiter here.

Coherent but demanding setup. The C11 gives a 0.35 degree wide field: NGC 6946 (about 11 arcmin) sits comfortably centered with margin, framing is good. On the other hand, at this focal length and with the ASI533 pixels you are markedly oversampled under 2.5 arcsec seeing, as confirmed by measured FWHM around 8 to 9.5 px: you spread the signal over many pixels for nothing. A focal reducer (f/6.3 or f/7) would give back flux per pixel and shorten the required time while keeping the galaxy well sized. The EQ6-R clearly tracks well, no elongation signature in the measurements. The IRcut filter is the right choice on a color galaxy.

The diagnosis in detail

The verdict is clear: nothing to fix on the optical or mechanical side. The PSF panel gives elongation from 1.01 to 1.11 depending on zone, a center at 1.06 against a field floor of 1.01, a corner/center FWHM ratio of 1.049 and horizontal and vertical asymmetries at 0.047 and 0.031. In other words, the C11 is collimated, backfocus is right, the sensor is not tilted and the EQ6-R left no drift or oscillation signature. The only slightly outlying value, TR at 1.11, corresponds on the panel to a star next to a blend, so it is not significant.

What limits the image is the signal budget. With 6h at f/10 on a modest surface brightness galaxy, the background stays very close to the black point (margin 1.59, Bowley skew 0.87) and a strong stretch is needed to pull out the arms. The consequence cascades: background graininess, chroma mottling in the dark zones, and highlight compression that whitens star cores. These are three symptoms of one cause, not three independent problems.

Comparison with the DSS confirms the nebulosity and the pinkish HII regions in the arms are genuine and faithfully rendered, and that no instrumental gradient or artifact crept into the background. The processing is overall restrained and well executed, with no dark halos or plastic look.

Priority actions

  1. Double the total integration on the target to lift the spiral outskirts out of the noise
  2. Consider a focal reducer on the C11 to gain flux per pixel against the oversampling
  3. Treat sky background chrominance with a mask restricting the action to dark areas
  4. Protect the highlights during stretch and recover star core color through separate star/background processing
